dogs eating straw

Has anyone ever heard of dogs getting plugged up by eating straw? I had a dog with undetermined GI problems -wouldn't eat, and after 3 unproductive trips to the vet I found a poop pile with a plug of straw in it. The dog got better on his own - was wondering if that was the problem...

Re: dogs eating straw

I did have a dog that was obsessed with eating straw as well as twigs, grass and anything else he could reach. The symptoms would come and go. It caused awful problems with his stool and he would vomit up globs of straw, twigs etc.. I had to wonder..."why is this dog so determined to eat roughage?" Well with process of elimination, I figured he was having digestion problems, "sensitive stomach" or allergies. and he would eat this insane remedy when his stomach bothered him. When I changed his diet to a good quality lamb & rice food (Eukanuba) it seemed to do the trick. This dog lived to a ripe old age of 20.

It may not be the answer to your problems??? Just feedback for thought....One thing to really watch for is a dog eating fox tales, which often get mixed in local straw... they can embed in the digestive track and really cause some medical issues. You might also want to switch to cedar shavings for bedding.

Good luck

Re: dogs eating straw

thanks so much for your response. I'm glad you brought up the problem of foxtail. I have been getting a lot of seeds in with the straw and spent most of last August pulling it from in and around the dog yard. I use cedar chips as ground cover [for the straw-eater who is also a bowl tipping pebble eater], but didn't think they would provide enough insulation to replace straw in their boxes. Is there a way around this?

Re: dogs eating straw

It is frustrating. Most of the time a thick layer of cedar is sufficient for Anchorage temperatures. A lot depends on your dogs coating. There is no easy answer. You could put a "flap" on the entrance to the dog house but most sleddogs would have that removed in a matter of seconds.

Anyone else have suggestions????

Re: dogs eating straw

Switching foods is one way. but Euk is expensive. every dog i have loves to eat grass. gives the roughage. One thing that i have tried is Phsyliumm (spelling)? and it worked great. you can get it most places. It is also great for humans and is used in bread and metamusil. Once i added this to their diet. the straw eating quit. It comes in a powder and is inexpensive. It does gell/goup up pretty quick but works great and is good for all of the dogs. just like us they need fiber tooo. for my house dogs and cats, i usually grow a plug of regular lawn grass for them to munch on during the winter.
hope this helps
