Pecks Bad Vote

On Friday, May 20 the final day of the Kansas legislative session, the Senate voted unanimously to increase the honorarium to families of Kansas National Guard members killed in combat. Our senator, Derek Schmidt, did not expect any "no" votes.

General Tod Bunting, adjutant general of the Kansas National Guard, was quoted by the Topeka Capital-Journal saying, "there is strong evidence that the people we serve and care about also clearly care about us" and Governor Kathleen Sebelius, a strong supporter of the honorarium, was quoted in the same article as stating, "We have an obligation to serve these families as faithfully as their loved ones served us." There are about 1,400 Kansas Air and Army National Guard members now serving in Iraq, according to the article. Three Kansas National Guard members have been killed in Iraq. The Topeka Capital-Journal went on to report that the Senate voted 36 to 0 for the increased honorarium. The House was not as enthusiastic, with 103 voting yes and eight voting no. One of the eight votes in the Legislature against the honorarium was that of newly-elected state Rep. Virgil Peck Jr. of Tyro.

Virgil never served his country in the military service. Virgil was never in combat. When Virgil cast that ballot he did a disservice to the families of Kansas servicemen and servicewomen. He was not truly honoring the service and the sacrafice our local soldiers are making and will make in the future. And I believe, Virgil was not representing the people of the 11th District who sent him to Topeka in January to represent them. The people of this district do not all support the war in Iraq or the administration's policies, but we do support our troops who are in harm's way.
