"....the truly legendary Joe Zawinul, comes to the Palace of Fine Arts on November 2nd..."

Syndicate in San Francisco

Re: Zawinul

I'm going to hear/see Joe at Blues Alley in D.C. in a few weeks (he's there for 4 nights)! Not great enough to just have the chance to see him live; I get to see him in an intimate club in which, with some luck, I'll be able to personally express my awe and and gratitude to the Master.

Re: Zawinul

Dave are you bassist? If so, don't forget to hand him a cassette with your demo on it and tell him you loved his playing since his days with Cannonball....it's historically proven that this strategy improves your chances of getting the bass spot in his band!

Joe Zawinul: Still Jazz's Multicultural Ambassador

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/20/AR2006102001737.html

"The sextet boasts an extraordinary electric bassist in Linley Marthe, who hails from Mauritius, off the east coast of Africa. His sleek virtuosity conjured memories of the late Jaco Pastorius, Zawinul's band mate in the groundbreaking jazz fusion ensemble Weather Report, though some slippery forays into funk and Afro-pop revealed another aspect of Marthe's personality."

I heard the Zawinul Syndicate on Sunday night at Blues Alley in D.C. What a treat! Better still, I had a chance to speak with Joe and have my picture taken with him. He was friendly and gracious. A real honor.
