Pets transportation

Can anyone help!
What is the best way to get my dog over to Spain.

She is fully done at the vets and she has her passport. What is the best way to get her over to Spain. Has anyone driven through France or by Ferry to Spain. How long does it take to travel.

Cheers Costa Kaz

Re: Pets transportation

Hi Costa Kaz
We moved to Spain last year with our Dog. We originally booked our plane tickets for the family and our family dog was going to go by pet courier who basically pick up in UK and deliver to Sapin in 3 days. They travel by road in a air conditioned people carrier. But last minute we changed plans and drove our family car down instead. I took the Plymouth ferry to Bilbao or Santander (sorry can not remember which) we landed in Spain about lunch time and it took me 9 hours to drive from port to Nerja. Few stops along the way for breaks, running dog etc but very easy to follow road signs. I have heard from others 10 hours is the norm and you could even go through France that would take another 10 hours with a sleep over. H

Hope this helps pete

Re: Pets transportation

Hi Kaz

I brought my dog over from the UK and he has travelled by car all over Europe now. We took the fast ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg which meant he had to be in the car for about 3 hrs by himself. Most ferry companies say that dogs have to be left in the car. They do let you visit your pets but we decided not to as it would just be unsettling him.

We drove down from France to the Costa over a couple of days. (Roughly: Cherbourg, Rennes, Nantes, Bordeaux, to the border near San Sebastian. We used mostly the toll roads and although they were quite expensive it was much quicker and therefore better for our dog)
http://www.hotelformule1.com/formule1/index.html are v cheap and cheerful places to stay that allow dogs. We tried to drive for about 3 hours, stop for a hour and then 3 more hours.

Here in Spain I reguarly organise for rescue dogs to be be sent to the UK to their new owners.

Flying a dog can be very tramatic. It is also very expensive as they have to fly BA! But the travelling is over in one day. Pet couriers are very professional people but this service can also be stressful for the dogs as they are in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people. In my experience dogs are often very clingy after the trip.

Phew, long post! Let me know if you want anymore help about the move or what additional treatments dogs need once they get here

Kate
