pete these are there purely to warn high vehicles (they would have to be high eh!) or low flying objects (my friend says ufo's) of the wires across the motorway. it seems ridiculous for high vehicles but with the heat of the sun the wires do stretch in the summer, well thats my excuse anyway. I used to ask everyone the same question and this was the answer from a friend of mine who seems to know
