Re: lifeguard training

i live in texas, and they may do things differently here. we did 500 yards, which were 4 laps freestyle, 2 laps breast stroke, and the last 4 laps were any combination of the two. On the surface dive we went out 20 yards, went down 12 feet to recover a 25 lbs. diving brick and swam back the 20 yards (must keep both hands on brick at all times). As long as you keep your eyes open, you should get the brick on your first try. How do you know if you pass? You either get the brick or you don't. As far as the 500 yards, obviously you would need to complete it, but I think form also matters. Chuck (freediver) is an instructor. He may be able to tell you more.

Re: lifeguard training

Audrey, the number of times you are allowed to surface dive would depend on what is causing you concern. For example, if the depth of the water were a problem for the ears, I would allow a few practice dives after practicing equalization of the pressure. The depth of the water should be between 7 & 10 feet. Most municipal pools are 12+ so I would suggest getting comfortable diving at the pool you will be guarding at. The diving brick is 10 pounds (not 25 Paul!!) although it may seem like 25. As far as passing the brick recovery, either you can recover and tow it back, or you can't. You will know pretty quick. If you have other questions please let me know!
