Re: Welcome to the UGotGlass Support Forum

Hi,

I have worked in polymer clay for many years, PMC since about
1999, now I am adding dichroic and fused glass.

My question is; is there a way to sculpt a small face in
polymer clay, make a mold that will fire in the kiln, to
fuse/cast a glass face cabochon?

I can sculpt a face the size I want, I need to know if you
can suggest a easy to use mold making material that can fire
in my Paragon SC2. Does the face need small holes in the bottom of
the mold for air release when the glass is firing in it?

I think it would be a great centerpiece combined with PMC

Thanks,
Janet

Molds

Hi Janet:

Sorry for the delay; I was away visiting my Mom. You should make your positive from PMC and fire it so it's hard. You can use ceramic clay for the mold.... just make a little pancake that is somewhat thicker and larger than the positive and then press the positive into the clay. Pull out the positive carefully and let the clay dry. Once FULLY dry coat the inside with kiln wash careful not to fill in any detail. Fill with glass and fire. Voila. there are other mold mediums and materials to make positives from but this is an easy way to get started.... hope this helps,
Nan

Re: Welcome to the UGotGlass Support Forum

Hi Nancy,

Does the earth clay mold I make need to be fired first? Or
will it be fired when the glass is firing? If fired at the same
time will escaping fumes from the clay effect the glass?

Thanks for your help.

Molds

Hi Janet:

It depends on the size of the mold; I make jewelry so the molds are small. Firing the clay makes it stronger so for larger pieces I would recommend firing the mold first. More importantly, make sure your mold is totally dry before placing it in your kiln...any moisture can cause the mold to crack and then you'll have a real mess to deal with...
