Correspondence Class Discussion Section
Dear Students:
Please post your questions about your projects in this section. You may find it helpful to review the questions other students have asked, as well as my answers to them. Feel free to email me if you prefer; I will post a synopsis of questions and answers here for others to review.
As this is a public forum I ask that visitors who are NOT taking the class do NOT post in this thread.
All the best,
Nancy

Re: Correspondence Class Discussion Section
I've just added a chat feature to my webjournal on GlassOrchids.com and will set up chat sessions where we can all discuss the projects together. It's a new feature but I thought it would be worth a try. Also, let me know if you guys have ever used Skype because I do have that set up on one of my computers and that might be a viable way for me to show you some things.
Best,
Nan

Dichroic Glass Pendant Class instructions now available for download
From now on when you purchase the class online you'll receive an email with a link to the instructions for you to download. You'll have 3 days to download the file but you can only download it one time. If you have a problem please let me know and I'll make sure you get the document.
The instruction manual is 25 pages long so you can either read it on your computer (it's a PDF), print out the whole thing (it's optimized for printing) or print out sections of it as needed.
Please respect me and my work by not distributing this information to others or using it as teaching materials yourself. If you would like to use my instructions for teaching purposes we can come to a mutually agreeable arrangment; just discuss it with me.
All the best,
Nancy Tang

Re: Correspondence Class Discussion Section
Do you have any suggestions on the photography aspect of sending you what we have done for our class assignment. The pictures I have taken so far, were taken with a good quality digital camera. However, the pictures did not turn out nearly as well as the stone itself. I was greatly pleased with that - it's just the picture taking I seem to have a problem with at this time.
Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

Re: Correspondence Class Discussion Section
Hi Freda:
If you have a scanner you can just lay the pieces on it and scan in.. that give a pretty good quality image. What I find with my camera is that I have to hold it a good distance up.. laying the piece flat on the table and taking picture from directly above. The camera sets the focus for me. It looks small in the camera but when you suck the images into photoshop or the like it looks just fine.
I'm not the greatest photographer myself but these things work for me.

Re: Correspondence Class Discussion Section
Hi Nancy -
I just tackled my first project. But I have encountered a problem. It turned out really pretty. It is cooling in the kiln as I write. But the portion where the mandrel is only has about 1/8" of glass surrounding it. I followed fusing instructions from the internet, which I will post below. But, is there anyway to fix the piece? Thanks, Cindi
25 minutes - 500 degrees
25 minutes - 800 degrees
20 minutes - 1000 degrees
10 minutes - 1500 degrees
Instructions did say "During the last 10 minutes, keep a good eye on the kiln so the pendants don't over fuse"
I did peek, the last 10 minutes, and was not sure what I was seeing at that point. So I deferred to the instructions.

Re: Correspondence Class Discussion Section
Hi:
Where did u find those instructions? Just curious. My general instructions are to fuse as fast as the kiln will go to 1500 and hold for 10 mins. Let cool to under 500 and crack the door. Let cool to 300 and remove from kiln but keep on hot shelf.
Each kiln is different so I would not go to 1500 on the first try if I were new. For instance, my largest kiln full fuses at 1325. Fusing is like adding salt to soup.... you can always add more but you can't take it out.... you can always fuse again but once overfired you can't go back. What kind of kiln do u have?
You could grind down the edges so the whole thing is 1/8" or you can love it the way it is. That's about all you can do at this point. The fun is in trying again anyway
Send pics if you can,
Nan

Re: Correspondence Class Discussion Section
Hi -
Thanks for the reply.
I got the instructions from a subscription I get about jewelry making from About.com. Regardless, I am having MEGA fun tackling these projects.
The kiln I have is a Paragon Caldera-S. I will run a "non-scientific" experiment, to work out my kinks. Then proceed with the next project. Thanks a bunch and I have sent a picture to your email address. Have a great day....Cindi
