draping/ slumping glass

Hi great website and some cool stuff i am going to order as well. I had a question about draping glass. I tried this yesterday-double layer and results were disasterious. I had a 6 in small floral stainless steel former. i used your instructions on the site cut the corners and beveleled the edge-except I did two layers 10 inch square and prefused (added frit) Well -it seems to be to much glass. My glass puddled (a large puddle) all around the bottom. Did you do this on a larger former? How big of a piece of glass should I use if I have the 6 inch former and I want to go double layer glass? When I practiced with window glass a few weeks ago single layer-i use a 9 inch piece and it had lots of clearance-it didn't get close to the bottom-thats why I thought 10 inches would be fine. I am very new to fusing-i was concerned if I did a 10 inch square single layer and prefused it to decorate with frit- that it would distort and shrink and be unusable. Help! I am wasting glass and time! on that note -is there anything I can do with the glass puddle vase I created? can I break it up and use it as chunks to use for something else? any advise would be so appreciated!

Re: draping/ slumping glass

Hi Toni:

I have used this method to do 1 layer but I have also added frit and stringer right to the piece when I drape it. It seems to tack fuse before it drapes so the pieces don't fall off.

I think that you are heating too hot for the 2 layers OR holding too long; this is why it puddled on the bottom. I have only gotten a 'puddle' if I overfired.

In general I measure the side x 2 and use that as my width. So if the mold is 6" high then a 12" wide piece of glass should work; the width of the base gives you some wiggle room there. But again, over firing will cause the glass to stretch and puddle.

There is always some loss of glass and time when trying out something new so don't get discouraged; it's just a part of the learning process. Yes, you can smash up your mistakes and do other things with them:

1] Use in a casting mold
2] Use as frit
3] Use with a frit mold and make another flat piece to re-slump.

Hope that helps,
Nan

Re: draping/ slumping glass

Thanks for your response back-your way sounds much easier-I will try it today. I was using a pre set slumping schedule that came programed with my kiln
300RPH to set point 1270 hold 15 minutes, then ramp down full to 960 and hold for an hour. Then 100RPH to 700 and off. I think I will just turn it off today after the 15 minute Soak time and see what happens. I want to clarify one thing- you said do not open kiln because of breakage-does that mean even at the highest temp? My peek hole is almost a waste. I have a Jen Ken round kiln 14 inch shelf and the peek hole is in the middle of the side. I can't really see much. Thank you again for your feedback.

Re: draping/ slumping glass

Hi:

No just don't open it until it is OVER 1000 on the way up and don't open it UNDER 1000 on the way down.
