Pendant/Jewelry Making

Hello,

Somewhere I read that Sterling Silver wire could be used in place of Thinfire shelf paper (rolled to 1/8" thick)or fiber paper. How is that possible as the wire fuses inside the glass? The wire cannot be pulled out. Suggestions/comments?

Re: Pendant/Jewelry Making

Sterling silver wire will NOT replace a mandrel or fiber paper strip. It WILL fuse into the piece forever. You can fuse FINE silver wire into a piece to make a bail and it will not get firescale but it cannot be removed.

Hope that helps,

A mandrel? Does it work like lampworking - put bead release on it and after it cools, soak in water and then I can pull out the wire?

Thanks for your help.

Exactly! We sell small ones (6" or so) to use in smaller kilns.....

Thanks, I just purchased some from you along with other supplies (barette mandrel, etc).

Thanks for your help.

Ok, now I have another question. The mandrels - can you use kiln wash on them instead of bead release? Since kiln wash prevents the glass from sticking to the barette mandrel - I thought it might work for the mandrels instead of bead release.

People do use kiln wash, although you'll have to make it a little thicker. I prefer bead release however as I feel it gives superior sticking power to the mandrel but comes out of the channel much easier and completely.
Personal preference.

Re: Pendant/Jewelry Making

Thank you - I was having trouble with the bead release coming off the mandrel. I fused large glass pieces with mandrels (and bead release) and cut them into shapes, the bead release was coming off the mandrel when I was trying to put it back into the hole so it could be fire polished.

You don't need to put the mandrel back into the hole to fire polish. I never do. You just have to have a good fire polish firing schedule.
