metal bails

What type of wire do I use to make my own "fused in" bails? I have seen looped bails fused in pendants but am not sure what type or gauge of wire has been used. Also, how can I stop wire (when fused) from discoloring (blackening)?

Thanks ahead of time for the help.

Re: metal bails

you can use high temp wire bought from any glass site. Once it has been fused you can bring it back to silver by rubbing it with steel wool. If that doesn't work you can try CLR on it.

Re: metal bails

Hi temp wire can be used but I feel that it cheapens your work; I use FINE SILVER (not sterling) wire to make the loops. 20 gauge. High fire, or nichrome, wire tends to blacken and cannot really be shined back up...its not that shiny to begin with. I use it solely for sun catchers or other non-jewelry items. Fine silver wire is a precious metal and lends a higher actual AND perceived value to your work... in addition, it does NOT get firescale from being kiln fired and retains it's silver color.

Hope that helps,
Nan

Re: metal bails

Do you use dead soft 20 gauge fine silver round to do this?
