dichroic glass from India and China

Is dichroic glass being manufactured in India and Chine now? There are cabochons, pendants, etc. being sold at art and craft shows, etc. that are selling very inexpensively and are coming from the above mentioned countries. The sellers are stating that the stones are dichroic glass. I thought that it was just the USA producing dichroic glass.
This is a concern for all glass artists. Thanks for your help.

Re: dichroic glass from India and China

I don't believe dichroic glass 'sheets' are being manufactured in India/China but I do know that there are cabs being made in India and other places. There are some pendants that look like spoons that come from China and are NOT dichroic glass even if the sellers say they are.. they are foil. If you look back over the years at the lampwork industry you will have seen a similar thing happen.... an influx of product made in India and China... however there are still wonderful American lampwork artists making a living. The quality of those beads is obviously NOT equal to beads made by an individual artist in their studio since they are mass produced. The 'style' of those beads makes it obvious what they are. Looking at imported cabs is the same.... they are what they are... and that is a mass produced product.. NOT one made by an artist.

Best,
Nan

Re: dichroic glass from India and China

Hi Nancy, Thanks for your quick reply. One of the concerns is this. Those vendors selling "dichroic jewelry" manufactured in China or India are also selling FAR below a competitor selling dichroic jewelry who purchased dichroic glass as we all do. This is happening to a friend of mine. Aside from mass producing cabs without great care, etc. it disturbs me that it's even possible for someone to sell dichroic jewelry for so little. Is there a substitute for dichroic glass that looks a lot like the real thing that you're aware of? She is in another country and emailed me this evening about the disaster from competition selling for so little. Thanks again.

Re: dichroic glass from India and China

The only 'substitute' I've seen is FOIL; the Chinese, and others, use a type of silver and/or gold foil in their pieces which is not 'real' metal and looks shimmery. I've seen people sell these as dichroic through ignorance or design. The 'spoon' pendants sell in a U.S. catalog for under $2.00 each.

Companies from foreign countries can sell dichroic cabs for less because their cost of doing business is much lower. They don't have to pay their employees more than dirt and have no insurance or other associated costs with doing business in a responsible way.

This will put some American glass workers out of business BUT the best defense is to make a quality product that shows your artistic talent. People will no longer be able to layer 2 pieces of glass, fire them, pop them out of the kiln and call them art. THOSE are the types of cabs being sold for dirt cheap because they are purchased from overseas by the gram and then have a finding glued to the back.

If your friend can send me a picture of one of these cabs I might be able to identify it. Since they are so cheap she could purchase one for investigation purposes LOL.....
