Bangles - Help Please!!

Hi. I would be grateful for any help. I have just tried to make a bangle in my kiln. I have all the necessary equipment and it does not seem as scary as I though it would be but I have a problem..... All seems to be going well except for the bit where you use the graphite tongs to shape the hot glass. I can't seem to get the end bits, which are under the mandrel, to bend under enough. Is it just a knack? I am trying to follow the instructions in the book by Jayne Persico but it is not working. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Re: Bangles - Help Please!!

There is a knack to it AND I'll tell you.. I purchased Jaynes video and couldn't do it BUT then I took her class and there was one trick that was left out of the video and may be missing from the book.

You have a hotbox? You put then mold at an angle so it goes from corner to corner right? So the bracelet blank ends are facing a corner as well. When you move the tongs to press UNDER you bring them all the way down so that the tongs TOUCH the edge of the kiln.

Also make sure you work fast and reheat if you have to go back in... if the glass is not soft enough it won't shape correctly. It's a bit of a pain but once you get it you'll have it...like riding a bike.

Good luck and be patient with yourself,
Nan

PS: You can keep working on a bracelet as many times as you like till you get it right.

Re: Bangles - Help Please!!

Thanks so much for the tips. As luck would have it I tried again today before reading your reply! I thought I would try using stainless steel cooking spatulas instead of the tongs. Someone came to the door with a delivery when I should have been with the kiln. So the kiln got rather hotter than I had intended! Whether it was the extra heat or the spatulas I do not know. But it seems to have worked! It has made my day. I guess I should now try again with the tongs at the higher temperature. Thanks so much for your help. It is great to know there is someone out there when you hit a problem.
