beginners problem with pmc and dichroic

Am just a beginner, but am hooked! Two out of 6 dichroic cabs fired in pmc 3 settings developed cracks near an edge of the glass. Had fired (according to instructions of one experienced with pmc and glass) at 1290F for 30 minutes. Crashcooled to 1000F then rest of way (overnight) to room temp. Can these cracks be "healed" by refiring? If so, how?

Re: beginners problem with pmc and dichroic

You experienced thermal shock. NEVER NEVER EVER crash cool the pieces when you have both metal and glass together. Let them cool to room temp (below 100 degrees) before you open the door.

The other issue could be that the metal is too tight around the glass so that when it shrinks (contracts) during firing it puts too much pressure on the glass.

My bet is with the crash cooling tho....

You can fire the pieces again to try and repair the some but if you go all the way to full fuse then the glass will 'flow' out of the surrounding metal. I suggest you try to go somewhere between fire polish and full.... they should at least come out well enough to give to friends and family even if not good enough to sell : )

Hope that helps,
Nan
