Using Mandrels in Kiln

Question? Do you have a small kiln? YES

Can't find mandrels to use in it?
Well, now you can! Our mandrels are the same quality stainless steel as longer mandrels but will fit into your smaller kiln (kiln shelves are 4" - 6" square). These mandrels are 5" long.

You no longer have to settle for using fiber paper to make your bead/pendant channel!

When you say channel is that the hole to pass the necklace through? I was not aware of using mandrels to make holes in my glass. Thought about it but was unsure this would work. Do I use bead release or a spray mold release on the mandrels?

Thank you.

Re: Using Mandrels in Kiln

Hello:

I coal the mandrel with bead release and let dry. Once the piece is fired and cooled you plunk it into a container of water to let the bead release soak for a few minutes and then wiggle the rod out. Sometimes this is difficult (it is in lampwork too) and you have to use pliers to hold the mandrel while twisting the 'bead' around the mandrel.

Do not pry the mandrel out when the bead release is dry because it is much like kiln was and you don't want to breath in the dust.

Best,
Nan
