Re: Jan H - The Journey

Thanks, Renee, for including me in your lovely site. And thanks to each of you who have responded here or by e-mail. I appreciate each of your kind and generous comments.

This is a "what-if" story and I have played havoc with the plot. I hope the characters, however, remain fairly true to Miss Austen's originals.

Hmmmm...Darcy had better snap to attention! Looks like he's got a little competition and the guy definitely has Darcy at a disadvantage at the moment.

Jan's villian is showing a little of his own appeal.

Fun story!

Hello!! I'read this new chapter with a big interest!! I love the way you transpose Jane Austen's dialog of the first proposal ("your arrogance, your selfish disdain of the feelings of the others..."etc) in the current of events. The escape of Darcy and Lizzy is full of suspense too

Re: Jan H - The Journey

Thanks, Mixon and MissyMay!

I confess that when I wrote this story, it was just pure escapism. The whole plot is rather far out, but fun for me to imagine. It gave me a chance to let my imagination run wild.

In P&P2, Mrs. Bennet says something to the Gardiners upon their late arrival at Longbourn about being afraid they had been set upon by robbers or something like that. I began reading up on highwaymen and even though they were not as prevalent in the early 1800s as in the previous century, it was still an infrequent peril for travelers.

Also, it provided a situation for Darcy and Elizabeth to be thrown into each other's constant company, something I always like.

Re: Jan H - The Journey

Egads! How excrutiating for both Darcy and Lizzy to be subjected to Fitzwilliam's sharing of Darcy's bumbling. You'd think he'd curb his tongue until he knew a bit more about Lizzy, but NO....Of course if Darcy hadn't said it, he wouldn't have had to regret it, eh?

I see trouble on the horizon! LOL

Re: Jan H - The Journey

What a clever story, Jan H - I am always so very impressed when writers take a total risk an go out on a limb with a line of the story AND it works beautifully - your weaving in of lines from the book or movie add to the cleverness. I am so enjoying the story, but not surprised as I've read a couple of your other stories and liked them a great deal as well. Well done, and do keep writing - you are too good not to!

Re: Jan H - The Journey

Jan,

I am not normally a huge fan of all the hundreds of "what if..." stories out there yet for some reason this one has captured me. You write beautifully, capture the Austen style very well, and your whole premise with the bandits etc. if very unique.

Now if Lizzy can stop being such a putz! What is with that girl? She feels all sorry for Morgan and gets mad at Mr. Darcy! Poor guy never gets any breaks.

Keep up the good work and don't keep us hanging too long.... the suspense may kill me!
Jan H

Re: Jan H - The Journey

Thank you, Sharon! I'm glad you like this "what-if." I agree, there are a lot of them out there.
And Maura, Mixon, MissyMay, Maya (my, what a lot of M's!)and Rita, thank you for your comments. Taking the time to send a message means so much to me.

I'm afraid Elizabeth will remain a "putz" for awhile in this story and, as usual, misunderstandings between our favorite couple continue. If we think about the timeframe, it's still quite early in their relationship. They met in early Autumn and it's now the end of November-first part of December. Elizabeth still doesn't know the truth about Wickham or Darcy. She and Darcy's relationship has fast-forwarded in this story because they were forced into intimate circumstances.

This, and "The Engagement" which I read yesterday and today, are absolutely fabulous. I suspect you may be channelling Miss Austen - the tone is absolutely spot on with her wonderful novel. I am bookmarking this site to keep up with your work. Lovely, lovely! Thank you!

Re: Jan H - The Journey

I'm lost. Chapter 10 truly surprised me.
Lizzy has always been lively and witty, stubborn, easy to misjudge others, but also ready to change her mind when facing truth. Indeed intelligent and wise:
even wiser than her own father when it came to propriety matters and to how easily the repute of the whole family whould be at stake with a "faux pas". And yet here she stubborny resists all reasonable objection and is ready to face family disgrace.
It seems she overestimated every man in her path, except Darcy.
ANyway: great piece. Keep going - pleeease!

Re: Jan H - The Journey

Thank you for each of your responses. They mean so much to me.

Paola, I'm sorry Chapter 10 makes you feel lost. I agree with your description of Elizabeth, but in this story she loves Darcy so much that she would sacrifice her own happiness and that of her family to spare him marriage to one he does not love. I do not think she underestimates him, but rather misunderstands his feelings for her. She believes he responds out of sacrificial duty, not love for her. She truly fears that he cares for someone else. In turn, she is willing to sacrifice her own reputation to spare him a marriage of convenience.

I know they're pitiful, but it allows me further opportunities to make them wallow in angst.

Re: Jan H - The Journey

I know they're pitiful

Oh no, not at all, dear Jan, your characters are so romantic they make us entirely, perfectly and incandescently happy... in the end!

Her feelings are a bit reverse to the book, right? In which Darcy, after having helped Lydia, doesn't want her to marry him out of gratitude, but for himself and himself alone. So, he'd rather stay single than marry someone who doesn't return his love. Awwww, he's the best!

I hope to upload another chapter soon, dear readers.

Jan, I put off starting to read this at first, because I wasn't sure from the summary that it was for me... but oh my goodness, once I did start I couldn't stop!

I love it... it's refreshingly original and such fun! And I love that she doesn't realise he loves her - not that I want her to be unhappy, but it's just so wonderfully angsty - plus I remain confident you're going to make all well in their worlds by the end!

Can't wait for another chapter
