JAFF Index is a year old this week (Jun 2)...

The JAFF Index is a year old this week …

Nearly a thousand stories are now listed and linked within, but that’s not even half of all the JA fanfiction out there. And stories don’t appear unless the author has consented to the inclusion of a listing.

Thus, this is a renewed invitation for all authors whose stories are not yet listed in the index, but who would like them to be, to step forward and provide us with the information we need to include them.

At a minimum, this is simply the story title, your preferred author name, an indication if it’s Regency or modern, the sites on which you posted it, and at least one thematic category. You can provide this information easily via the site’s suggestion box, or via e-mail (admin at jaffindex dot com, make the necessary substitutions). Or, for more detailed information, please use the site’s author checklists (linked from the main menu), which include complete thematic category lists, and earn the heartfelt gratitude of those of us who maintain the index …

I’ve been keeping the index updated to the best of my ability for the past year, with the much appreciated assistance at various stages of small groups of helpers. In bouts of energy, when not busy with other things, I’ve been sending out PMs or e-mails asking authors to give consents (but some of you are unreachable, some e-mails are lost, and some recipients simply don’t answer).

The time has come to call for a more permanent “staff” – a few people willing to devote a bit of time every week or so on an ongoing basis to such tasks as compiling basic place-keeper entries for new stories, contacting authors for permissions, checking stories familiar to them for suitable additional categories, tracking postings or completions on existing stories for last-date updates, checking that links and ratings in the listings are correct, and so on.

For website security reasons, I’ll continue to be the one doing the actual live updates on the database, but farming out the data-gathering operations to assistants is becoming more and more necessary. It’s partly because the JAFF Index has expanded to include moderns, which doubles the potential scope, and because of some of my own projects and coming RL commitments.

So, if any of you are willing to commit some time every few weeks, to gather and send up this kind of information, please e-mail me (as before, admin at jaffindex dot com) and we’ll discuss what’s needed and which of these tasks you’d most like to be doing. Nowadays I’m not reading even half of the stories on the JAFF sites; neither, I suspect, do many of you – but between a team of data-gatherers, we should be able to catch and classify most of them and get their authors’ consents.

And for everyone else out there … I hope you continue to enjoy what the JAFF Index can offer.

Victoria, I congratulate you on this amazing achievement. Such a brilliant idea! Hats off, my dear. Due to my tight schedule, I'm afraid I won't be of much help to you, but I hope you appreciate the promotion on the site.

New features for the JAFF Index

Announcing two new features for the JA FanFiction Index …

Both of these new additions can be accessed from the main menu of the Index.

Acronyms Index

This is a list of some of the more frequently asked-about stories with long titles, sorted in acronym order, to assist readers in determining what that puzzling series of letters in a board message might refer to.

Not all the stories with lengthy titles are in the list at this point; it concentrates on more recent ones. We’ll be watching for and adding missing ones that are inquired about, and we’re always open to suggestions from readers for titles that should be here.

Story Details Pages

This is a new way of looking up all the details on a story that are in the JAFF Index database, presented together on a page including all the links, blurbs, and other stories by the same author.

You can select which story to view in the selection page displayed when you click the menu item, and as well, all story titles in all the lists generated by the Index now link to the Story Details page for that title.

More information on using these new features in on the Help page.

Authors … Please Read!

Spoilers Field

Among the new changes to the Index is the addition of a Spoilers field for the story descriptions, displayed only if given, on the new Story Details pages.

Spoilers will be stored in the Index only if provided by the authors of the story, for the comfort of or to satisfy the curiosity of readers who might not read a tale otherwise, or who prefer to be warned off. These should be used in place of categories that might be too revealing, to warn about possibly unhappy endings or unpopular pairings, popular character deaths, other overly angsty developments, or simply about twists that reveal enough to ruin the enjoyment of a story’s progress.

It’s entirely up to you, the authors, to make use of this feature or not … and if so, please notify us at admin squiggle-at jaffindex dot com (obfuscated to foil harvesters) or via the Suggestion Box in the JAFF Index.

Gathering Story Permissions

It goes on and on, admittedly in fits and starts, as RL allows … but it’s a never-ending battle just to keep up by sending PMs and e-mails to authors as new story postings appear, to say nothing of the older stories not yet added.

One thing that would help immensely is for any authors who are agreeable to the idea, to grant us perpetual permission to add and list their new stories as they appear.

And for the others, including authors of stories that have been on the boards for some time and who have not been contacted: it’s not a snub, it’s simply a lack of time to get around to it, and sometimes just a sheer lack of an e-mail address by which to contact you.

All Jane Austen fanfics, set in any era, inspired by any novel, of any rating, by authors of all ages, are welcome in the Index. You have only to ask. If you’re not yet listed, please come forth through whatever means you can – an e-mail to admin squiggle-at jaffindex dot com as above, or the site’s Suggestion Box, or a PM through an Austen board, or even a mention in the blurb of a story itself that it’s okay to list it.

And for those authors who prefer not to be listed, please let us know that too, so we can strike you off the “pending contacts” list and not trouble you again. It’s no problem; we fully understand that some authors would rather not to be listed, or prefer a selection of their stories not to display – the reasons are varied and all are perfectly good ones.

I would never have imagined, dear Victoria, that an index as perfect as this one could get any better. But you keep on improving it. Amazing!

New feature for the JAFF Index...

Another new feature for the JAFF Index: Story Updates:

This is a listing (with the usual links) of stories newly updated or completed, by descending date order, for the past ten days. (But only stories whose authors have consented to listings in the Index are included in this feature - hint, hint, for authors whose stories aren't yet listed; we invite you to come forth and let us know you'd like to be included!)

Re: JAFF Index is a year old this week (Jun 2)...

Victoria, What a fabulous addition to the index!! I have been away from my computer most of this week and was surprised to see how many updates that I have missed. Also, I noticed a website that I have not visited before. YEA!!

Thank you so much for all your time and efforts you have invested.
