The Montreal Police Service and Sun Youth are asking the public for help in apprehending a suspected rapist. The Police web site press communique ( http://www.spcum.qc.ca/fr/nouv_pub/pre2pubf.asp?commu=447 ) is in French only, so here is an English translation of the relevant portion (the release is dated 4, August, but the TV were relaying the same information last night);

"Montreal 4, August 2004. The investigators of the Sexual Aggressions Section of the Montreal Police are asking the public's help in identifying the suspect in a series of four sexual aggressions which occured in the Rosemont/Petite Patrie district at night, between 9 and 27, July 2004. Three of the incidents occured in the quadilateral of the streets Christophe-Colomb-St.Denis-Jean Talon-Bellechasse, and another occured on Beaubien street between Pie-IX and St. Michel boulevards.

The male suspect distracts his victims with a simple question and then forcibly removes them to an isolated place. The young woman victims are aged between 16 and 25 and walked alone in the street when they were approached.

The suspect, of a dark complexion, is around 30 years of age, meaures 1.78 metres tall, weighs 82 kilogrammes, wears short, slightly curled hair. He expresses himself in French with a certain accent.

All persons possesing information susceptible to identifying this individual are invited to communicate, in all confidentiality, with Info-Crime at (514)393-1133."

The rest of the communique deals with safety measures young women should take. LCN, the French-language 24/7 news station, further described the suspect as "Latinoamericain", which translates into "Hispanic" in English.
