Colin Sauer, the violinist, was a contemporary of Ronald Smith at the RAM.In the programme for Ronald's 80th. birthday recital at the QEH, Sauer pays tribute to his friend of six decades. He took part in performances at the Academy of some of Ronald's works-a violin sonata,a piano trio and a string quartet. He was also the soloist in the first broadcast performance of Ronald's Violin Concerto(1941) with the BBC Northern Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Groves.
I have tape of this broadcast. The sound quality is very poor but nevertheless it seems an appealing work.It is in one movement and lasts for just under 16 minutes. I think it deserves to be heard. Also on the tape is a solo piano piece entitled 'Scherzetto' of 1939. It is an enjoyable, if not very original work. It reminds me, in parts, of Ravel.
I assume that Ronald's wife, Anne, has the original manuscripts of all Ronald's works but I cannot be sure.
