I am trying to trace the parantage/birth of Charles Gurney.
He was a phamacist in Deal before 1819 when he sailed to Africa's Eastern Cape as leader of the Deal Party of 1820 Settlers. He was about 42 then and had a child with him so presumed widowed.
He married my 3x great grandmother Sarah in 1828 in Port Elizabeth and was her fourth and last husband.
Around 4000 migrants went on the government sponsored scheme to settle the Eastern Cape. They were the beginning of the society that formed and are paid tribute to today for their struggles and eventual sucesses there.
