Stanley´s words about Jaco: "A lot of people used to think we were enemies because, supposedly, we are two premier electric bass players. But we got to be good friends. Jaco and I got close in the last five years of his life. A short while before he died, he gave my son the old baseball glove he had used as a kid. That was a side to Jaco that few people ever saw. He could be very giving, very compassionate. I have some great memories of Jaco. About a year before he died, I was touring with my band and Jaco came by and sat in. He was sober, and he really sounded good. We jammed on School days and Birdland. I will never forget that".
That's great! As the title says: "return to forever"!
The one reason people thought Stanley and Jaco were foes is because in those days without Internet, cell phones, copying CDs and such, people read the Playboy Magazine year poll which often listed Jaco ahead of Stanley out of 3 or so total bassists named. The riff started more between fans who had split opinions of who was the better, Stanley and Jaco never felt that way about each other at all.
Once on tour with WR, staying at a hotel in Aarhus, Denmark ('79), both ran into each other in the lobby on their way to the restaurant eager for a bowl of lobster bisque, which had the reputation of giving intense dreams. Great times.
