OAKLAND PARK TO CUT RIBBON FOR JACO PASTORIUS PARK ON DECEMBER 1st

Opening Festivities Include Free Jazz Concert Featuring Toni Bishop, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Thomas and Randy Bernsen

OAKLAND PARK, Fla…(October 31, 2008) – The City of Oakland Park will take another important step in its downtown redevelopment at 4:30 p.m. on Monday,
December 1st when City officials and other dignitaries will cut the ribbon for the grand opening of Jaco Pastorius Park at 4000 North Dixie Highway.

The ceremony will be followed by a free “Jazz on the Green” concert featuring several of the artists who performed with the new park’s legendary namesake Jaco Pastorius.

“We selected December 1st as this was Jaco’s birthday,” says Mayor Layne Dallett Walls. “And we are excited to feature performances from musicians who had personal connections to Jaco, as well as the jazz band from Northeast High School which Jaco attended.”

Pastorius, who grew up near Oakland Park City Hall, showcased what would soon become extraordinary musical talents at Northeast High School. More than 20 years after his untimely death, he is still considered by many in the music industry to be the world’s best bass guitarist and performed around the globe with other jazz legends, including Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell and the group Weather Report.

According to Parks and Leisure Services Director Jenna LaFleur, the 6 p.m. jazz concert will feature a “who’s who” of South Florida jazz. Songstress Toni Bishop, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Thomas, Jeff Carswell and Randy Bernsen are among the artists tentatively scheduled to perform.

“We are pleased to present this free concert for our residents and anyone else who could like to come and see why we refer to Oakland Park as a ‘hometown choice,’” said LaFleur, who encourages everyone to bring blankets or lawn chairs as the concert will take place on the park’s large grass field.

Oakland Park City Manger John Stunson said the idea of a downtown park came out of a citizen-driven charette in 1999. It was further endorsed in the Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) Plan adopted in 2005. The plan described the need for the park to help beautify the once industrial area and provide a recreational and aesthetic value to the downtown district. Its location north of NE 38th Street makes it a visible element when traveling north or south along Dixie Highway.

Stunson said the new park was made possible through the Broward County Commission who approved funding through the Broward County Safe Parks and
Land Preservation Bond Program. In addition, the City was awarded a Broward County Challenge Grant which is being used to renovate the building that will be the Jaco Pastorius Community Center. This community center will provide additional space for Parks and Leisure Services programs and activities, as well as be available to local community organizations for meeting space.

For information on the grand opening of Jaco Pastorius Park or the free jazz concert, please call the city’s Parks and Leisure Services office at 954-630-4500.
