Guessing is bad business in a hospital. Patients like doctors who know. Guessing is also bad business when you are about to depart from this world—as each of us must do some day. Then, at the threshold of eternity, we will want to know what lies beyond. We will want facts, positive facts from God's Word, and here are some of them: Eternity: There is an eternity, and there is a judgment. God's Word says: "It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Heb. 9:27). "And I saw the DEAD, small and great, stand before God . . . and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works" (Rev. 20:12).
Our Sins: You and I know we have them. Maybe not as many as the next fellow, but enough to keep us out of heaven. "There is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:22-23). ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment" (Eccles. 11:9).
"The fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and *****mongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" (Rev. 21:8).
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Rom. 6:23).
Hell's Reality: "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." ". . . the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever" (Rev. 20:15 and 20:10).
God’s love "But Cod commendeth His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Rom. 5:8).
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
Christ's Sacrifice: "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God." "Who gave Himself for our sins" (I Peter 3:18; Gal. 1:4).
Faith's Efficacy: "He that heareth my Word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24).
Have You Faced These Facts?
The child of God accepts them all, calmly and joyfully. He no longer dreads eternity, but longs to be home with his Saviour. His sins are forgiven; he is eternally delivered from God's judgment, by the death of Another. He rejoices in God's love for Him, and rests confidently in Christ's work for him. He is saved by grace, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and will never be condemned. All is well with his soul. How is it with you, my friend?
