Your MP's update from Joshua

Westminster and Politics
With the New Year, Parliament is back in session, and there have been several big bills up for debate. Most notably, the Government's Finance Bill, which I decided to vote against because of the stealth taxes it contained, including freezes on income tax thresholds, which would hit Maidenhead residents hard. Nationally, this would pull 780,000 more people into paying tax for the first time and push 920,000 into the higher rate.

I also already met the Local Government minister this month to urge her to change the settlement. In the Labour Government's "Fair Funding Review" they are cutting £29 million from the Borough's budget over the next three years. This is not fair for residents. I also pushed for the costs paid by RBWM for state visits to be repaid, and I will continue to do so.

The Community
This month, I was delighted to attend the Maidenhead Swimarathon, an event that brings together residents of all ages in support of local charities. The enthusiasm of the swimmers, volunteers, and organisers was amazing, and it was inspiring to see so many people taking part. The event raised thousands for various charities and was, as ever, a true success! Well done to everyone involved.

I was also honoured to join the Civic Shabbat Service at Maidenhead Synagogue. There was a warm welcome, and the service shared a strong sense of togetherness, which was deeply moving. Moments like these highlight the richness and diversity of our local community, and the importance of standing alongside one another in celebration and solidarity.

I also met the Maidenhead Railway Board, which brought together local authorities, rail operators and transport bodies to discuss performance, future services and much‑needed station improvements. Updates covered GWR’s Project Brunel, ongoing fleet renewal, and the potential for direct Marlow–Maidenhead services. TfL outlined reliability challenges and upcoming timetable changes, while concerns were raised about congestion, cancellations and limited capacity. Partners also reviewed the condition of Maidenhead Station, noting recent investment but no current funding for major upgrades. The Board agreed to continue pushing for better connectivity, clearer communication and long‑term infrastructure planning.
