Jenner's Café owner points to public toilet costs after FOI says no rent paid
The owner of a long-running Maidenhead café has denied he received a ‘good deal’ after a freedom of information (FOI) request said the council had received no rent from a lease dating back to the 1990s.
Andrew Jenner, owner of Jenner’s Café, said the figure, revealed in an FOI published last week, did not reflect a wider arrangement with the Royal Borough council, which he claimed included the business spending thousands of pounds maintaining public toilets each year.
The Royal Borough has not responded to requests for comment on the claims.
More than 4,750 people have signed a petition to ‘Save Jenner’s Café’ after it emerged the eatery could close its doors permanently when its lease expires at the end of August.
The Royal Borough, the landowner, wants to renovate the site to give ‘best value for residents’, and council leader Simon Werner said ‘there’ll always be a café in Riverside Gardens’ if Jenner’s closed.
