Residents have called for action on a ‘lethal’ road between Hedsor and Bourne End – riddled with potholes, deep cracks and loose debris.

Multiple drivers and neighbours have decried the state of Hedsor Hill, saying it is filled with ‘deep potholes’ and has ‘completely worn away in places.’

Cars weaving out of their lane to avoid these potholes on the ‘narrow’ road pose further danger, onlookers added. Drivers do not always slow down to account for this either, commenters said.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Jus Moody, a Cookham resident who uses the road frequently to get to Wexham Park Hospital, said the biggest concern was the ‘deep tracks’ or ruts in the road.

“A car can handle it – it can right itself if there’s no oncoming traffic,” she said. “But for a bike or a motorbike, it’s lethal.

“You would really get into trouble – they don’t stand a chance. You wouldn’t want to be whizzing down there on a bike.

“It’s very easy to get caught in the tracks. You’ve only got to get a small tyre hit one of those worn-down tracks and you just skid off.”

In the past year, the road damage has become noticeably worse, Jus said.

Reporting potholes on Fix My Street does not work especially well, she added, because there is no way to pinpoint the issue, since the problem runs along ‘a great long stretch’ of the road.

Jus, and others online, further noted the likely significant damage to tyres from people using it frequently.

“I wouldn’t want to commute that every day,” she said.

“It’s a back road, but at the same time, it’s not a little country lane. It’s a very well-used road that serves from Flackwell, Bourne End and Marlow, up to Taplow, Slough, and Burnham.

“Cookham to Wexham [Park], that is the route that you would take if you didn’t want to catch all the traffic on the Bath Road, which is also full of roadworks.”

Answering concerns online, Cllr Penny Drayton (Independent Group, Flackwell Heath & The Wooburns) said councillors are ‘constantly pushing’ to get something done and are hoping for action ‘ASAP’.

There is, however, a well-documented wider problem with potholes in Buckinghamshire, and thus, there are budgetary constraints, overlapping works and prioritisation order to consider.

Ward councillors can suggest which roads need repairs each year, and it ‘normally equates to one [road] per ward per year,’ said Cllr Drayton.

However, Jus questions the prioritisation process – saying she is ‘amazed’ Hedsor Hill is not higher on the priority list.

“Are they waiting for an accident before they push it up their list?” she said. “I can’t see that lasting a winter safely at all.

“It just beggars belief, what with the development that’s coming in Bourne End,” she added.

Thomas Broom, Buckinghamshire Council cabinet member for transport, said: “The most recent repairs to potholes on Hedsor Hill were completed on April 13.

“Hedsor Hill was last inspected on May 15, which resulted in no additional or immediate defects being identified.

“Wider plane and patch or resurfacing works are not currently scheduled in for this location this year.

“However, we are monitoring and will continue to carry out repairs accordingly.

“We also work closely with ward members to prioritise capital works in their local area.”
