A multi-storey car park in Maidenhead town centre is expected to reopen in the autumn following works to make improvements and boost security.

The Stafferton Way car park partially closed in January due to damage caused by recent incidents of vandalism.

Residents have previously raised concerns over issues at the car park including anti-social behaviour, failing lighting and broken lifts.

In November last year, the Royal Borough approved a £280,000 budget to fix the damaged lighting and install CCTV.

The car park was initially closed to all users except for Great Western Railway (GWR) customers.

However, the GWR parking has now been relocated to Vicus Way car park.

Cllr Geoff Hill, the Royal Boroughs cabinet member for transport, said: The contractors are in there working and we expect the car park to be open in the autumn.

I would have thought the latest would be around about September.

We cannot guarantee the time, depending on what they find. So thats the target date.

Cllr Hill added: All the lightings got to be replaced because 90 per cent of the lighting was smashed.

CCTV is being put in.

There is a significant amount of re-cabling because people stole the copper cables.

So that has to be done.

He added the works involve a certain amount of redecoration work and replacement of features such as fire doors.

Where there is graffiti, the walls are either being repainted or sprayed to remove it

The works that need doing are quite straightforward, said Cllr Hill. Theres just a lot of it, thats all.

There is significant damage in there, that is why it is taking so long.

You cannot rush these things, and when we finally turn it out, we want to make a big improvement to Stafferton Way.

It is not something you can achieve overnight.

Cllr Hill said the works will make a significant improvement to the car park.

As long as people do not smash it up again, then we were on to a good thing really, he said.

It should be very much more secure with the CCTV tidied it up, brightened up and re-lit.

It should be a really, really significant improvement and let us hope it stays that way and drives all this anti-social behaviour away.

Cllr Hill also shared an update on the Vicus Way car park, directly opposite.

The Royal Borough has been facing ongoing issues with the multi-million-pound Vicus Way car park, which opened its doors in December 2022.

Lifts at the car park have been impacted by drainage issues, which damaged concrete cladding has led to scaffolding being in place around the car park since May 2024.

Cllr Hill said: We are just trying to line up a contractor to do the works.

I do not know how long it is going to take, but what we were trying to do is search down the engineering drawings for the company that is gone out of business.

I really do not know what the timescales are for it.
