Pedal to the Park returns with family-friendly cycle ride to Windsor Great Park
Families, friends and cyclists of all ages are being invited to swap the car for two wheels this weekend as Windsor Cycle Hub hosts its second Pedal to the Park community ride.
The free event, taking place on Sunday, July 19, aims to encourage more people to discover how easy it is to cycle from Windsor town centre to Windsor Great Park, with a picnic on the village green.
Organisers hope the event will inspire residents to build their confidence on bikes while making the most of one of the town's best-known green spaces.
Windsor Cycle Hub has spent the past five years helping people get back into cycling by repairing bikes at The Swan in Clewer and organising weekly guided rides for cyclists of all abilities.
Trustee David Bonney said the event was designed to show that the Great Park is within easy reach by bike.
“This Pedal To The Park is the second big bike ride organised by Windsor Cycle Hub,” he said.
“Windsor Great Park’s on our doorstep and it’s dead easy to get there by bike. There is a hill, but we’ll help and encourage people to get up it.
“Once they’ve conquered the challenge, they’ll be able to return to enjoy the many wonders the park has to offer over the summer and beyond.”
Participants will gather at a reception point at the entrance to Stag Meadow, beside Windsor & Eton Football Club, from 10.30am, before setting off in one of three volunteer-led ‘bike buses’.
The guided rides are expected to take around 30 minutes, with regular stops for water and rest breaks, and will also depart at 11am and 12pm.
Volunteers will lead each group, with another cyclist ‘conductor’ at the back to ensure nobody is left behind.
Cyclists are also welcome to make their own way to the Great Park by following specially marked Windsor Cycle Hub route signs.
Once at the village green, riders can enjoy a picnic, children's cycling activities and two additional cycling routes around the park, supported by volunteers.
Organisers are also hoping an ice cream van will be available during the day.
The event is open to everyone, with children under 16 required to be accompanied by an adult.
David said: "Pedal To The Park is for everyone, we'd love to see whole families including kids, nanas and grandads.
“It’s fine to come on your own, or with a few friends. By the time you ride home, you’ll have even more friends."
Booking is required for insurance purposes and to help organisers manage visitor numbers.
