more info on story

could anybody give me more information about this story
wich my father has told me.
My Greatgrand father(Lawrence Gili)went on a ship to Sellonica during WW1 and during battle the ship sank and there were only two survivors one being my great grand father. He survived by swimming out of the port hole. This story has been confirmed true as i was told by a 93 year old man that my father knew when he lived in Malta during the war, when i went to Malta in 1991,and my father remembers the war medals my Greatgrand father was awarded for this ocasion any more information would raly be appreciated .

Re: more info on story

Paul,

What an interesting story!

Without wanting to raise your hopes too much, I invite you to visit a webpage, which is related to survivors from Salonika who were recovering at Malta (Mtarfa Hospital). The page is: "http://www.lupton2.freeserve.co.uk/history/imtarfa2.htm" and there is a person in a photograph (provided therein) whose name is: Private Gillingham, from the Hampshire Regiment (Hants), whose name strikes a resemblence, even if this is only a stretch of my imagination. Again, I do not wish to raise hopes too much, but every bit of help counts in such quests.

Please allow me to remind you of our Servicemen Listing at: "http://www.my-malta.com/service/stationed01.html", where you are welcome to submit details for publication.

Good Luck,
Steve
