YEAR 45 I grab the old year book, Lord it’s been ages. I Brush off the dust and thumb through the pages. I hum the school song , (that I rarely sung). God, there I am, was I really that young? There’s basketball, baseball, football, and track. The band and cheerleaders they lead the attack. The pep squad was awesome, the pep rallies loud. Back then we students were Exporter Proud. Of course, some stood out with their brains or their looks. Me, I had trouble just finding my books. Some kids had ego’s that made them feel taller. Their greatest pleasure ... making others feel smaller. Some showed compassion, some were just mean. Sadly, I fell somewhere in between. Time, I guess, is a great equalizer. Forty five years, are we any the wiser? REMEMBER THE ALAMO! Our history cries. To us, just a place to eat burgers and fries. One of the best things ‘bout drivin’ a car. Cruisin’ Lake Jackson and the old Dairy Bar. Reunion time, it’s year Forty - five. How many of us are there still alive? Who is still married and where are they at? Who still has hair and who isn’t fat? I pull into town and look for a room. There, I am greeted by Dow’s “sweet” perfume. Unlock the door, my bags go inside. Back in my car and I go for a ride. I see some changes, some things are the same. There’s some old buildings with just a new name. No “drive-in” movies with rows lined in shell. Great memories were made there that most wouldn’t tell. I see my old house, the memories start flyin’. I know it sounds silly but I’m sittin’ here cryin’. What once was a castle that reached to the stars. Is now just a shack all covered with scars. Saturday mornings, in Freeport, down town. Used to be crowded now no one’s around. Time changes things, it’s really quite scary. Think I’ll drive on by the old cemetery. Fresh flowers I lay for my mom and my dad. I was the only child they ever had. There’s thoughts of Lewellen, I wish he were here. Some memories fade but his face I see clear. Back to my room to prepare for the night. I want, myself, to look perfectly right. Will I see anyone that I’ll recognize? Or will it seem like we’re all in disguise? I shave my face and before me I see. A boy full of dreams, that used to be me. A face full of lines and covered in gray. Reliving the past but I’m stuck in today. I arrive feeling much like the Lone Ranger. Everyone here just looks like a stranger. The name tag says one thing, my thought, “YOU CAN’T BE!” My pride takes a fall, as they say it to me. Tales of the present, tales of the past. Some tales have grown since I heard them last. Some bring us laughter some bring us frowns. Life’s given us all our ups and our downs. Does everyone think about “What If” some time? If one thing were changed would it help our life rhyme? There’ll always be questions without any answers. Life is a stage and for now we’re the dancers. We’ll play our part until the last curtain. The futures not ours, nothing is certain. We’ve looked at each other with different eyes. The last dance is over we say our goodbye’s. I remember a line from a Newbury song. “The dancin’ has stopped but the music goes on”. Larry Moore |
