Here’s a local volunteering opportunity which shows you how to do it
Good news! WildCookham is getting increasing numbers of people interested in restoring nature and wildlife to their gardens or larger landholdings. But it can be difficult getting started. Our annual Wildlife Gardens Awards (just launched for 2025) provide an incentive, but success is not just a case of scattering a few seeds and hoping they’ll grow.
That’s why we encourage anyone interested in this type of project to get hands-on involvement in similar schemes. We have been alerted to two such opportunities in Cookham, with the chance for people to volunteer for these in a personal capacity over the next few weeks. In the process, you can build your own wildlife gardening and management expertise, and put it into practice this Spring – plus have some fun with like-minded people.
The projects are being led by local resident Edward Donald, through his recently-formed business Natural Shoots, offering specially prepared and locally sourced seeds. He’s working with Winter Hill Golf Club who are keen to introduce wildflower variety into the edges of their course and the Jolly Farmer pub in Cookham Dean who plan to do their bit for nature in the pub garden.
How to volunteer
Anyone interested can opt to help during a morning or afternoon session on any of the Wednesdays from tomorrow Wednesday 16th April (at The Jolly Farmer) to Wednesday 23rd, Wednesday 30th April, and Wednesday 7th May (at Winter Hill Golf Course). All are welcome, including families and young of all ages. Just email Edward at ejsdonald@btinternet.com to learn more and sign up. This is not a WildCookham project but we’re delighted to support projects like this which help us all towards the goal of a better natural world in Cookham.
